Set for later this week in Nova Scotia, the best in women’s curling face off at the 2024 World Women’s Curling Championship in Canada. As noted in this space before, Switzerland is the strong favorite to take home the gold in this event, but there have been some other exciting developments in this competition that could perhaps change the standings. Per the latest World Curling Federation (WCF) rankings, Canada is actually the number one team in the world at this moment with 415 points. They are followed closely by Switzerland at 370, along with South Korea (33) and Sweden (292). Of course, these squads have been highlighted in this space before, but it still bears mentioning that they could all make a run at the world championship if things break their way in Nova Scotia.
For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these world championship contenders, a predicted winner, along with even more notes for curling.
The No. 1 Contender: Switzerland (Odds: +175)
As noted above, the Switzerland squad has been a dominant force in women’s curling for some time now. The Swiss are aiming for a fifth-consecutive world championship in Canada after they won the country’s tenth overall women’s world championship last year. The team has a stacked roster and is led by skip Silvana Tirinzoni. In addition to the skip, another excellent athlete to keep an eye on is Carole Howlad who is the lead for the Switzerland squad. In the course of her storied career, she has been a part of six gold medal teams at the Curling World Championships along with two European Championship squads. This is a talented group with some newcomers as well.

The No. 2 Contender: Canada (Odds: +230)
Perhaps the main competitor to Switzerland in this competition thanks to the home-field advantage, Team Canada is another group that has accomplished a lot at the Curling World Championships. At last year’s World Championship, the Canadians finished in third place behind Norway and Switzerland, but this year they have led all of the teams in the world thus far in the WCF rankings. Skip Rachel Homan has appeared in four World Championships for the Canadians along with two appearances for the squad at the Olympic Games. Moreover, she is a former Canadian junior champion, along with being a four-time Canadian national champion, and the 2017 world champion, all as a skip.

Third Ranked Squad: South Korea (Odds: +300)
Currently rated as the third-best squad in the world per the latest WCF rankings, South Korea finished in second place at the 2022 Women’s World Curling Championship. Like the other standouts on this list, the Koreans have an excellent skip in Gim Eun-ji. At 34 years of age, she has notched a variety of championships. This includes being a part of five Korean Women’s Championship teams, most recently occurring back in 2023. In addition to her success in Korea, she has also appeared as part of five different teams at the World Championship. Moreover, with South Korea currently in third place in the standings, and only forty points behind Switzerland, it would appear the gap is closing for the Koreans. In addition to finishing second in 2022, the Koreans also notched a third-place finish back in 2019.

Final contender spotlight: Sweden (Odds: +350)
The Swedes are the last team highlighted in this rundown and the squad is certainly a force on the national stage. In the past, Sweden has won eight world championships, with the most recent one occurring back in 2011. Of course, the recent world title tilts have been dominated by Switzerland and Canada so perhaps this is the year that Sweden sneaks back into the gold medal hunt. In the past three world competitions, they have finished in fourth place in each outing. Prior to that, the squad notched back-to-back second-place finishes in 2018 and 2019. They will certainly have their work cut out for them though with the top of the leaderboard being dominated by some top-flight squads.

Prediction: In what should be a fantastic showcase, Switzerland is still the choice to take home the crown at the Women’s World Curling Championship. Certainly, the Swiss have earned the right to be the big favorites until they are knocked off the throne.
