Who: Demetrius Andrade vs. David Benavidez

What: Super middleweight boxing fight for the WBC interim super middleweight title

When: Saturday, November 25, 2023

Where: Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, Nevada, U.S.

In what should be an excellent bout, two undefeated fighters are set to lock horns later this month in Las Vegas with the WBC interim middleweight title on the line. Matching up at the Michelob Ultra Arena, David Benavidez (27-0) faces Demetrius Andrade (32-0) in a bout for the former’s WBC belt. Benavidez comes into this fight coming off a unanimous decision title defense over Caleb Plant earlier this year and prior to that, scored six consecutive TKO/stoppage victories in a row. Andrade, meanwhile, has been stellar in his own right, owning a professional record of 32-0 with 19 knockout wins. He also had a fight earlier this year in January when he won unanimously against Demond Nicholson in Washington D.C.

In this article, SBS will be exploring the strengths of each fighter, share a predicted winner and also more notes about boxing wagering.

What to look for from: Demetrius Andrade

Andrade comes into this fight as a highly-respected fighter and for good reason. He has held multiple world championships in two weight classes, at light middleweight and middleweight. Moreover, he is a world champion boxer at the welterweight level, winning gold at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago. Recently, after 14 months of inactivity, Andrade returned to the ring against Nicholson for a 10-round bout where the former scored two knockdowns en route to his unanimous decision win.

An excellent southpaw striker, “Boo Boo” will be moving up to the super middleweight division to challenge for Benavidez’s belt. A boxer since the age of six, Andrade has been successful at nearly every level of fighting and was somewhat of a local folk hero in his native Rhode Island growing up. Moreover, the last time a fight came down to a split decision outcome for the 35-year-old was against Vanes Martirosyan back in 2013.

What to look for from: David Benavidez

The champion in this fight, Benavidez has also had a stellar run in his boxing career. He is a two-time WBC super middleweight champion and first won the belt when he was only 21 years of age. He has had two separate reigns, one from 2017 to 2018 and the other one from 2019 to 2020. Moreover, he holds the record as the youngest super middleweight title holder in history. As of this article’s writing, he is ranked second by The Ring and second by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board in his weight class.

A fighter with 23 knockout wins, Benavidez has sensational power and is on a collision course to take on the undisputed super middleweight champion, Canelo Álvarez, if he can win this bout. However, the undefeated Andrade presents a tough challenge for the champion as perhaps the most accomplished foe he has faced. With that in mind, Benavidez does hold a nearly 10-year age advantage over his opponent.

Prediction: In what should be a great bout, take the younger champion Benavidez to retain here given his youth and also more experience in the weight class.
